As of 2009, only 8% of women make up the veteran population (with 19% identifying as Black). Of all women veterans, only 19% utilize VA Health Care Services and 19% utilized their GI Bill benefits.
The number only becomes bleaker from there. You can read more of the Department of Veterans Affair Military Service History and VA Benefits Utilization Statistics here.
The point of me bringing up the statistics is to explain the lack of information geared not only to women veterans, but women veterans of color. There are some amazing sites out there helping out with navigating the VA System, but what about Women’s Health, Delivery, Cultural Competency and cutting to the meat of it all? I have been in the VA system since 2005 (I kept additional private insurance until 2010 and Dental until 2013), utilizing five different hospitals in 3 different VISNs, have been through the C & P process three times, devoted my graduate work to military and families and worked for the VA in the past. My experiences and views are completely my own, but I truly believing writing off the VA as a whole is not beneficial. I hope my Veteran Corner posts, though esoteric, will help a few people out there skip over the mistakes I have made and the helpful hints I learned. Let me know if these posts are helpful, and I will increase the postings.
